Mioderator’s Christmas Message
Christmas Greetings, Friends!
I trust that deep joy in the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, is
warming your soul and spreading throughout your community.
You may have seen my Christmas video message
(www.united-church.ca/communications/news/moderator/091216), in which I
suggest that such joy moves us to responsibility.
I have just returned from Copenhagen, where I participated, with other leaders in the World Council of Churches, in the events of the climate change conference.
As I await both my suitcase and my thoughts to catch up with me, CharlesDickens’ Christmas Carol is on my mind. The Ghost of Christmas Futurehelps Scrooge see the grief that will unfold if he doesn’t change andtake loving, generous action today. This sadness will touch not only hislife but the lives of those he loves. Once he sees what could happen, he changes and becomes an instrument of God’s hope and love.
Scrooge came to an understanding of the joy-and the responsibility-of Christmas. We too understand the joy of Christmas, and our responsibility. We will continue to call upon world leaders for global agreements that embody justice, ethics, and love, but we will not wait on their decision. Let’s take our own loving, responsible actions for the sake of our families and neighbours, for our offspring and God’s life-sustaining planet.
Christmas inspires belief that all things are possible, and that we can, as community, receive the gift of the Messiah-the true gift of Christ’s love for the whole world, which asks us to loosen our grip on old ways in order to embrace a new life of responsibility.
May it be so with you and me, your family and community-and with God’s whole Earth-making joy in Christ known, near and far.
Merry Christmas!
